About the Titan Band Program

The Ottawa-Glandorf Titan Band Program offers a variety of musical opportunities for O-G students.

Students begin their instrumental musical journey in fifth grade. In sixth grade, students continue to develop their fundamentals and begin performing more frequently. Students in seventh and eighth grade are taken from our three K-8 buildings (Glandorf, Ottawa, and St. Peter and St. Paul) and bused to the high school for Junior High Concert Band. This is also when students are offered the opportunity to begin exploring secondary or other instruments - double reeds, larger low brass, low woodwinds, and so on. 8th grade band members are given the opportunity of joining the marching band for football games and parades.

In high school, students have the O-G Titan Marching Band in the fall. The marching band is an OMEA competitive marching band, and has competed in OMEA adjudicated events since the 1970's. After marching season, the students then play in concert band, jazz band, pep band, and chamber groups for OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest.

O-G band students and alumni have other opportunities to perform as well. Our pep band is open to alumni, as is the commencement band, and on occasion, an alumni band will meet during the marching season.

Our Director

The director of bands at Ottawa-Glandorf is Adam Verbsky. Mr. Verbsky is a recent graduate of The Ohio State University, graduating with degrees in both Neuroscience and Music Education. While at Ohio State, Mr. Verbsky marched in The Ohio State University Marching Band, where he spent five years in H-Row playing the baritone. While with the band, he marched in London, England at an NFL game hosted in Wembley Stadium, the 2019 Rose Bowl Parade, and at three separate Fiesta Bowls, twice in 2016 and in 2020.

Mr. Verbsky grew up in Bellefontaine, Ohio, where he joined the band in 5th grade. Originally on trumpet, he was convinced to switch to euphonium in 7th grade and never looked back. While most of his time has been spent playing brass instruments in a variety of ensembles, Mr. Verbsky's primary instrument is piano. He took 14 years of lessons and studied under Dr. Caroline Hong at Ohio State. Throughout high school and college, he has performed in a variety of concert bands and smaller ensembles on string bass, guitar, piano, percussion, all varieties of brass instruments, and even clarinet. He is currently a member of the Brass Band of Columbus alongside his mother and younger brother, who both play alto horn in the group.

At O-G, Mr. Verbsky teaches band to students in grades 5-12. He also runs the marching band, pep band, jazz band, and teaches a music theory course for high school students.

Our History

In 1964, the schools of Ottawa, Glandorf, and Sts. Peter and Paul combined to form one high school. It was at that time we became the Ottawa-Glandorf High School Titan Band.

Our first director, Louis Breece, along with his long-time assistant director, Ken Schortgen, were the creators of the ever-popular "Titan Brass." The idea stemmed from both director's excitement for drum and bugle corps. The O-G high school band students would all choose between brass instruments, percussion, or color guard for the marching season. Woodwind players would switch back to their primary instrument for the concert season. The "Titan Brass" tradition would continue for the next 30+ years, until the judging in OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) contests demanded a wider variety of instrument sounds for their adjudicated marching events. Former assistant band director Paul Baransy accepts the blame for this move and requests that any complaints be sent in his direction.

The O-G Titan Band program has enjoyed a long history of successful performance. While under Louis and Fred's direction, the marching band never went to OMEA State Finals performances, so no official record of state qualifications are held through OMEA. However, it is widely known that the O-G Titan Band program was a repeat qualifier for OMEA State Finals from when OMEA started the current state finals format in 1980 until the early 2000's. Officially, the O-G Titan Band program has gone to the OMEA State Finals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2019, and 2021. In the program's entire history, they have only received a "1" (Superior) rating at OMEA State Finals once; in 2011.
